SAN JOSE -- Firefighters fought a garage fire in a neighborhood east of downtown and kept it from spreading to adjacent homes Thursday morning, according to the San Jose Fire Department.

The one-alarm fire was reported about 8 a.m. at a detached garage near South 20th and East San Antonio streets, Fire Capt. Ray Nibbi said. Firefighters brought the fire under control within 40 minutes.

Three people in the home associated with the garage were not injured by the fire, though one resident was taken to the hospital for an unrelated medical situation, Nibbi said.

When the fire briefly jumped to a nearby fence, firefighters kept it from spreading to neighboring homes. A cause for the fire was not immediately released.
