SAN JOSE -- Police temporarily shut down a portion of Highway 85 on Saturday after a woman threatened to jump onto the roadway from the Union Avenue overpass.

The incident happened about 12:25 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A CHP official said police initially closed the northbound lanes of Highway 85 and then closed the southbound lanes as well.

San Jose police, who also responded to the incident, managed to talk the woman down off the bridge, and "she was taken safely into custody," police Sgt. Heather Randol said.

The highway was reopened shortly before 2 p.m., authorities said.
