OAKLAND -- Two men who deputies tried to stop for speeding Wednesday afternoon remained at large after they drove the wrong way down a freeway on-ramp, sped away from officers and crashed into a tree, police said.
The names and ages of the wanted men were not released by police.
Alameda County Sheriff's Officer spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said deputies attempted to stop a white Honda on eastbound Highway 580 but the car took off speeding and deputies called off the pursuit. The driver then exited the freeway on the Grove Way onramp in unincorporated Castro Valley going the wrong way, police said.
Shortly before 2 p.m. the motorist crashed the car into a tree, taking down the tree and smashing the windshield, said a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The car was later found abandoned. Descriptions of the men were not available.
