BAY POINT -- A smoky vegetation fire Sunday afternoon north of the railroad tracks could be seen at far as Antioch, but no injuries were reported.
Contra Costa County firefighters took the call at 3:36 p.m. and the fire was contained by 5 p.m., but they remained on the scene doing cleanup and monitoring hot spots Sunday evening.
The cause of the blaze in a marshy area north of the tracks near Poinsettia and Suisun avenues had not been determined Sunday night, fire officials said. It may have started in a homeless encampment, a spokesman for the Contra Costa County Fire Department said.
Getting water on the fire was a challenge because of the marshy area. About one acre was charred. The fire remains under investigation, fire officials said.
