Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) is best known for the great dogs, cats, kittens and puppies we have available for adoption. But we have other pets here, too! In the three-plus years that FAAS has managed the shelter, there have been rabbits, chickens, roosters, parakeets, cockatiels, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice (domestic!) and turtles. Recently, I had a little baby chicken on my desk for a week until she found a new home!
While roosters are not welcomed in the City of Alameda (due to their noise), chickens are, and there is a growing community of backyard chicken farmers here on the Island. The city's municipal code (section 7-4.1) allows citizens to have a maximum of six chickens (and other domestic fowl, too). If you'd like to learn more about backyard chicken farming, visit the website www.alamedachickens.org. And, if you know anyone wanting to add a rooster to their menagerie, we've got a handsome one available for adoption.
Rabbits are popular in Alameda, too. They make great pets. Rabbits are quiet, can be litter box-trained, and are lovable, cuddly and playful. FAAS highly recommends getting your pet rabbits spayed or neutered so you are not overwhelmed with baby bunnies and because there is a huge overpopulation problem already with unwanted rabbits in shelters. There is a lot of great information about rabbits on the House Rabbit Society website at http://rabbit.org. You can also call them at 510-970-7575.
Currently, there are two darling guinea pigs at FAAS, a mom and baby. They are also relatively easy pets to care for and adorable. Their little squeaky noises are fun to listen to, and they are enjoyable to watch while they play. They like daily interaction with their humans, so having enough time for them is an important consideration, as it is with any pet. For more about guinea pigs as pets, visit the website http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/guinea_pigs.
Honor your pets by entering the FAAS photo contest! You can enter your photo online at www.gbcphotocontest.com/faas for a $20 registration fee and then get all your family, friends and colleagues to vote for your pet for only $1 per vote. The top vote-receiving photos are featured in the FAAS 2015 calendar. Call us at 510-337-8565 for information. Contest ends Sept. 7!
