HAYWARD -- Detectives are investigating the third homicide of the year here after a 24-year-old Oakland man was stabbed Friday night ¿and declared brain dead Sunday because of his injuries, police said.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, Hayward police were called to investigate a report of an unresponsive man in the greenway park near Bishop Avenue and Cascade Street. The man, later identified as 24-year-old Jack Maghoney of Oakland, had been stabbed twice and had cuts to his face, police said.

Maghoney was transported to the trauma center at Eden Medical Center, where he was treated for the stab wounds and brain hemorrhaging and admitted to the intensive care unit. On Sunday about 2:30 p.m., doctors declared him brain-dead. Maghoney, a registered organ donor, was kept on a ventilator so that his organs could be harvested.

Police did not release any information about possible suspects. The case remains under investigation; anyone with information is asked to call Hayward police at 510-293-7272.
