The new school year got underway Monday at Lum Elementary School -- as it did throughout the Alameda Unified School District -- with plenty of hugs and goodbyes exchanged between parents and guardians and their young children. Top above, Vanessa Huang, 5, pulls her sweater up to keep warm as she and her fellow kindergartners line up on the blacktop to enter the classroom. Top right, Yemen Saleh comforts her son Omar Abuzaid, 5, as he and his classmates say goodbye to their parents in Kimberley Hare's kindergarten class. Center, Hare gets a big hug from a past student, Jamar Fort, 7, who is heading to his first day in first grade as his mom, Mortisha Menefee, right, walks him to the blacktop to line up. Above left, parents get a last hug from their children. Above right, students head into class on the first day of school.
