That was not classy, Ron Burgundy.
Will Ferrell, as his newsman character from the Anchorman films, claimed on The Conan O'Brien Show last week that sea otters were "the dumbest animal on planet earth."
Well, the sea otters of the Monterey Bay Aquarium allegedly think differently.
The endangered southern sea otters, an icon of the Monterey Bay region, apparently have splashed back. An open letter to Burgundy has been posted on the Aquarium's website. It is "signed" by many of the aquarium's otters.
"We just learned that you've been saying mean things about sea otters," it reads. ". . .
The letter invites Burgundy to tour their Aquarium and "see the error of your ways."
The aquarium is also encouraging supporters to restore sea otters' good name by posting comments to the Facebook and Twitter accounts of Will Ferrell, Paramount Pictures and Conan O' Brien.
Ferrell, as Burgundy, made the comments as part of a conversation with the talk show host about an "Animal Hierarchy Chart of Intelligence" he created.
He claimed the chart was "scientifically proven."
It started innocently enough with the bald eagle on top, then the rooster. At the bottom was what Burgundy called "the lowly sea otter."
He said his dog, Baxter, had conversations with the furry creatures and they were "boring as hell."
"They go on and on about how much fish they caught," Burgundy said, "and 'I can swim on my back and crack open a clam with rocks.' And I'm like, 'OK, I know that.'"
A new $2.6 million sea otter exhibit debuted at the aquarium in March.
The otters' own "glass house of emotion" is a 55,000-gallon tank which is 19 feet tall and 28 feet across.
CSU Monterey Bay, where the mascot is the otter, is reviewing the footage from the O'Brien show before making a statement.
Anchorman 2 is set for release on Dec. 20.
