Name: Beverly Blockie
City: San Jose
Previous career: Working in sales at her family-owned recreational vehicle dealership, plus running a household and raising five children.
Second act: For many years, she has worked as a volunteer and history docent with several organizations, such as the Silicon Valley Tour Guide Association, California Pioneers of Santa Clara County, the San Jose Woman's Club and Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in San Jose.
How did you get involved in volunteer work? Over the years, it's really been a case of one thing leading to another. I had supported my husband in building a dealership of recreational vehicles. We had traveled a lot because of the business, which whet my appetite for travel. So I went to the travel career course at Foothill College and got an associate degree in that field.
I joined the Silicon Valley Tour Guide group and volunteered as one of their "step-on" guides, taking people around San Jose. Through that process, I ran across the History Museum of San Jose and took a docent course there. Also, St. Joseph Cathedral went through a restoration and I got involved there, eventually founding a docent program.
The History Museum was pretty much a passion for me, and I was a docent coordinator for a while there. Also, I'm part of the Preservation Action Council of San Jose. I joined the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County, and I've been on the board there, helping with the docent program. And I'm involved with the San Jose Woman's Club, where my grandmother once belonged.
What do you enjoy about your second act? I love downtown San Jose, I love history, so being involved in these historic aspects of the city -- I found my spot that interested me.
