The four represented Oakland Rowing Association, the newest rowing club along the Oakland Estuary. The club started in Fall, 2011 with 11 rowers and has grown to approximately 75 middle and high school rowers, and 20 adult rowers.
Oakland Rowing Association takes a more inclusive approach to the sport than many other rowing organizations. Stevens and his staff strive to bring a diverse range of kids and adults to rowing, especially those who have traditionally not been well represented in the sport.
Among other things, the club offers free after-school rowing classes to West Oakland middle school students, and encourages club members to bring friends who might not otherwise consider the sport.
