OAKLAND -- An Oakland police lieutenant suffered minor injuries Wednesday night when he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while walking across a street behind police headquarters, authorities said.

The lieutenant, whose name was not released, declined medical treatment.

The lieutenant works in the patrol division and had just gotten off duty. He was walking to his vehicle when he was struck.

The incident happened about 11:51 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Sixth and Washington streets which is just below Interstate 880.

The lieutenant was crossing Sixth Street in a crosswalk when a car turned onto the street from Washington Street, struck him and kept going, police said.

A description of the car and driver was not released.
