OAKLAND -- Two people were shot on Tuesday night in East Oakland and one of the victims was listed in critical condition, police said.

Officers were dispatched about 10:12 p.m. to the 1600 block of 85th Avenue for a report of shots fired, said Officer Helene Schmitt.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a suspect armed with a gun shot two people and fled the area in an unknown direction, Schmitt said.

One of the victims then drove the pair to a hospital, police said. At least one of them was listed in critical condition, police said. The other victim's injuries were not immediately known.

No motive was known on Wednesday and no suspect description was immediately available.
