OAKLAND -- An assault suspect surrendered to police Thursday afternoon, ending an hourlong lockdown at a nearby Dimond district elementary school.

The incident happened about 3:10 p.m. near Sequoiah Elementary School, 3730 Lincoln Ave. The victim, a man, was being treated at the scene for his wounds. The call to police was initially called out as a stabbing but the victim was apparently beaten with a rock, police said. He has non life-threatening injuries.

The school was put on lockdown and children were moved off the playground to safety.

Lincoln and Scenic avenues as well as some other streets in the area were closed during the police operation.

The suspect, who surrendered 4:08 p.m., had been seen entering a home on the 2400 block of Scenic Avenue, police said. Police said an argument between the two people led to the assault.
