OAKLAND -- The Bishop O'Dowd High boys basketball team was not going allow a repeat of last season's loss to Modesto Christian in the CIF Northern regional playoffs.

The top-ranked Dragons (27-4) ran all over the Crusaders 74-51 on Tuesday at Laney College and will play Capital Christian-Sacramento in the Open Division regional final Saturday at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

"Even last year we had beat them before we had to play them in the playoffs," said Bishop O'Dowd guard Paris Austin, who scored a team-high 16 points. "This year we were better than they were and we never take a game lightly."

The two teams had met before in a regular-season game at Bishop O'Dowd with the Dragons winning 70-52 on Feb. 8.

But there wasn't going to be any chance of a letdown, not if coach Lou Richie could help it.

"There wasn't going to be a letdown, we definitely had added interest and motivation," he said. "They're (Modesto) a great team and we used the 11 days we had off to work on our weaknesses. We broke down film and had a good idea of what we wanted to execute tonight."

The Crusaders (24-9) never led in this game as Bishop O'Dowd scored the first eight points with 6-foot-10 center Ivan Rabb (14 points, 13 rebounds), getting six.

The Dragons pushed the lead to 13-1 when Austin hit a 3-pointer with 3:44 left in the first quarter and ended the period with a 17-5 lead.

Rabb, Shane Farley, and Juan Anderson each scored four points in the second quarter as the Dragons extended the lead to 32-18.

Then Bishop O'Dowd pushed the throttle down, outscoring Modesto Christian 21-7 to take a 53-25 lead with 1:54 left in the period. Austin scored seven points, including a 3-pointer, and Jake Credo and Jiving Sandhog also hit 3-point shots.

The fourth quarter turned into a free-throw shooting contest and the Dragons won that period too, 21-17.

"I didn't do much in the first half because I was in foul trouble," said Austin, who had three points and three fouls in the first two periods. "I was able to get it going in the third quarter."

The only discouraging note for Bishop O'Dowd was that Farley suffered an ankle/knee injury with 3:25 left in the third quarter and did not return. Richie does not know the extent of the injury.

Kevin Hamlet led the Crusaders with 17 points.
