OAKLAND — Two killings over the Fourth of July holiday brought the city's homicide tally to 70 slayings for the year.

Ernest Evans, a 33-year-old man who had addresses in both Oakland and Suisun City, was shot several times early Tuesday in Jack London Square, police said. He was taken to Highland Hospital, where he died about 7 a.m., police said.

Evans was shot about 2a.m. in the 200 block of Washington Street, near the intersection of Second Street. At night, the area is almost always bustling with locals and tourists. A sports bar, restaurant and theater are all nearby.

Police do not know what Evans was doing in the area.

Sgt. Lou Cruz said police do not have a motive for Evans' killing, and investigators were trying to determine Tuesday if he had been in a confrontation before he was shot.

Officer Ken McKellar was driving in the 100 block of Washington Street and heard the gunfire. When he arrived on the scene, the gunman — who may have fled in a car — was gone.

Evans' slaying came just a few hours after Acts Mailo, 23, was shot in front of his apartment complex in the 3100 block of High Street in East Oakland.

Police said the two slayings are not related.

Mailo was shot at 11:04 p.m. Monday. Police did not have a motive in the slaying.

Mailo was taken to Highland Hospital, where he died at 11:39 p.m.

There were several people present when the shooting happened, but none of them was hurt.
