OAKLAND — Braughnwynn "Bibi" Jackson felt skeptical the first time she attended an informational meeting for the master's in business administration program at Mills College in Oakland.

"Everyone I talked to seemed to genuinely love the program," she said. "I thought, this is not real, it can't be. All these women supporting one another, the can-do attitude."

Jackson, who had previously worked in medical and science fields, had adapted to competitive and male-dominated industries and was looking for a change.

The Mills MBA program — less a than a decade old — is in the middle of transforming from a "start-up" to an established brand as one of two MBA programs in the United States specifically designed for women. The other one is the Simmons School of Management in Boston, Mass.

While women have made major strides in the business world in the last few decades, Mills believes its MBA program will help more women earn business degrees and reach higher ranks in the business world and provide a different experience than traditional MBA programs.

"The whole concept behind starting the program is to create more successful women business leaders," said Nancy Thornborrow, Dean of Mills School of Business and economics professor. "Just like it's important for Mills as a college to exist for women to have that choice, it's also important for women to have a graduate business program that is focused on women."
