Oakland — An Oakland man was charged with murder Friday in the shooting death last Wednesday of a 33-year-old man inside the slain man's home, police said.

Pierre Goins, 28, was charged with murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the killing of Julius Batiste, 33. The shooting happened about 4 a.m. Wednesday inside Batiste's home in the 2300 block of Humboldt Avenue, police said.

Goins did not know Batiste but had been invited by a mutual friend to play dominoes and card games in Batiste's home, investigators said.

Sgt. John Parkinson said Monday that Goins told police he believed Batiste was going to attack him before he shot Batiste four times in the back and fled.

Parkinson said there was no evidence to substantiate that Batiste was going to attack.

Police traced Goins to a friend's home in Stockton, where he was arrested Wednesday night.

Goins had a previous conviction of possession of marijuana for sale.
