OAKLAND — Twelve recent graduates of the Allen Temple Housing and Economic Development Corporation's "green built" apprenticeship program will be recognized Tuesday during a commencement ceremony at the Dr. J. Alfred Smith Senior Training Academy.

The program prepares participants for green-friendly construction jobs and trade union apprenticeships in Alameda County through "green" courses in solar panel installation, hazardous waste, lead and asbestos removal, along with general training in blueprint design, work ethics and hands-on simulated house repair. Graduates also receive assistance in securing part-time construction jobs.

The Allen Temple Housing and Economic Development Corporation, or ATHEDCO, is a faith-based nonprofit "whose mission is to transform lives through training and career development for formerly incarcerated individuals and the community at large," according to a statement from the organization.

The job-training program has been in place since 1998 and, according to ATHEDCO Executive Director John Harrison, has had more than 700 graduates since its inception. The green-training program was added this year.

Actor and humanitarian Danny Glover is the guest speaker for the event, which starts at 10 a.m. at 8501 International Blvd., Oakland.
