OAKLAND — Well-known nightclub owner and promoter "Sweet Jimmie" Ward died Friday night at the age of 74.
Ward died of heart problems, but "mainly he was just tired and ready to go," said his son, David Ward.
Ward was a longshoreman before he began operating entertainment venues in 1969. He opened Sweet Jimmie's at 577 18th St. in 1987 and shuttered it almost 20 years later after nightclub-related violence became an issue in the area.
"My father loved the community and always wanted to be around people," his son said.
"He loved nothing more than to make sure everyone had a good time."
A public service for Ward, where the community is welcome to come to a microphone to talk about him, will be held Thursday at Good Hope Church at 5717 Foothill Blvd. The event will begin with a quiet hour at 7 p.m.
A public funeral will follow on Friday at noon in the same location.
