A father and son were the victims of a vicious attack near the Fox Theater in Oakland on Friday, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers were summoned to the 1800 block of Telegraph Avenue about 3 p.m. and found 59-year-old Tiansheng Yu, of San Francisco, unresponsive, police Officer Holly Joshi said.

Yu was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. His son is expected to survive.

Joshi said the father and son were shopping in the area when two young men assaulted them in what appears to be a random attack.

In a prepared statement, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums said, "The brutal and random attack this afternoon in broad daylight on two innocent men was senseless and outrageous. Our hearts and prayers are with the father, now on life-support, and his loved ones who are also suffering."

The Police Department increased patrols Friday night in the uptown and downtown business districts, according to Dellums, who said police will "pursue every lead until those responsible for this violence are apprehended."
