FREMONT — A man shot himself in the knee Wednesday afternoon while he and two others ran from police who were investigating a report of shots being fired in Niles Canyon

The man suffered the wound — which is not life-threatening — just before 2 p.m., some 20 minutes after Fremont police were called to assist a California Department of Fish and Game ranger who heard the shots, said Fremont police spokesman Detective Bill Veteran.

When officers arrived, they saw the group of men run into a tunnel in the canyon near Sunol, Veteran said.

By the time the men got to the other side, one of them had accidentally shot himself in one of his legs while running, the detective said.

The three men were immediately detained. It was not immediately clear if they would be arrested for a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully discharging a firearm.
