BYRON — A crash on Byron Highway near the airport killed two people this afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Details of the crash were sketchy, but it was reported at 4:24 p.m. around Herdlyn Road and involved three vehicles — a GMC pickup, a Nissan Maxima and another car.

The accident and a call for a helicopter shut down traffic along a stretch of highway between Byron Airport and Mountain House. All lanes were reopened shortly after 7 p.m.

Contra Costa County coroner's deputies were called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. The identities of the victims were not yet disclosed. A third victim suffered minor injuries, CHP officer Scott Cakebread said.
