The Milpitas Police Department arrested two people early Saturday morning on suspicion of stealing copper pipes and materials from a commercial building on Montague Expressway.
At about 3 a.m. Saturday a police officer was checking the businesses on Montague when he saw someone walking around behind one of the buildings. The person had a headlamp on his forehead and was seen walking away from the back of a building to a nearby van.
A female suspect was seen running toward the same van. Both suspects got into the van and tried to drive away, but officers stopped them before they could leave the area.
Joann Joslyn, 45, of Sacramento, was the driver of the van and Michael Duran, 43, of Cupertino was the passenger, police said.
After officers spoke with individuals, they recovered evidence linking both suspects to the theft of copper from the building. Both suspects were arrested on various charges including trespassing, vandalism, grand theft, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools.
The theft and the related damage incurred to the building was estimated to be up to $100,000 by the property owner.
