OAKLAND -- A grocery store employee was pistol-whipped Thursday night during a takeover robbery of a grocery store near Oakland's Pill Hill, police said.

The robbery happened about 8:48 p.m. at the Grocery Outlet, 2900 Broadway. Police said two armed suspects, one of whom had a scarf covering his face, came into the store and took money from cash registers.

It was not known why the employee was assaulted. No one else was injured, and the amount of money taken was not released. Police are investigating whether the robbery is linked to a takeover robbery earlier this week of a San Leandro supermarket.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward for information leading to an arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information can call police at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211.
