HAYWARD -- Jake Smith scored three touchdowns, one on an interception return, and quarterback Kyle Austin threw two touchdown passes as the Broncos (1-0) overwhelmed the host Farmers (1-0) at Sunset Field.
Northgate, which had its best season in 15 years in 2012, scored four touchdowns and totaled 30 points in the second quarter to extend a 12-6 lead to 42-6 at the half.
Eric Haynes also scored two touchdowns on runs of 2 and 7 yards in the second quarter for the Broncos and Austin threw a 37-yard scoring strike to Smith for a 35-6 lead.
Smith, who also plays linebacker on defense, intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for the final Northgate score in the first half.
The Broncos took a 6-0 lead on their first drive of the game, taking the opening kickoff and going 78 yards in 9 plays, Austin throwing 15 yards to Smith with 7:59 left in the first quarter..
Hayward tied the game at 6-6 on its first drive when quarterback Marjani Ellison threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Amari Evans with 3:32 left in the period.
Northgate took the lead for good when Haynes ran 33 yards for a score with 2:54 left in the first quarter.
Matt Huang ran 25 yards for a score in the third quarter as the second half was played with a running clock.
Hayward went 4-6 last season and 2-3 in the West Alameda County Conference. Two of its nonleague wins came against Diablo Valley Athletic League teams -- College Park and Ygnacio Valley.
Northgate hosts San Marin-Novato next week and Hayward plays at Livermore.
