ALBANY -- Mt. Eden High running back Tookey Stevenson bulled his way for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Monarchs to a season opening win over Albany.
The Cougars (0-1) played tough in the first half, as they trailed just 6-0 after two quarters.
But just as in previous years, the small numbers took its toll on Albany's two way players, and fatigue quickly set in as the second half began.
Mt. Eden scored on their first play of the third quarter on a 29-yard run by Stevenson to extend the lead to 13-0. Following a tipped pass that was intercepted on Albany's next possession, the Monarchs scored moments later on an 18-yard run by Giovanni Remmen.
Albany's best drive of the night then took place as they went 76 yards on 13 plays but after having a touchdown pass called back, quarterback Nick Sternad threw an interception in the end zone to end the threat.
Mt. Eden's final score of the night followed the interception. A 82-yard, nine play drive ended with an 18-yard touchdown run by Dominic Williams.
Albany's only scored came on the last play of the game when Sternad's pass was tipped in the air and landed in the arms of Krishan Chada, who then ran the final 30 yards for the score.
Sternad was 13-for-26 on the night for 206 yards while receiver Rio Root caught 6 passes for 79 yards. Mt. Eden quarterback Joanthan Sturholm completed six passes for 98 yards.
