Bryce Chu
Piedmont: Baseball
Chu excelled in the postseason to help the Highlanders claim their first North Coast Section baseball title, beating Northgate 6-5 in the 2A East Bay title game. He went six strong innings against Campolindo in the semifinals, allowing two runs on three hits to get the win. He also hit a two-run homer in the second inning in a 13-7 win. In the title game, Chu came in to get the final six outs for the save.
Julian Purvis
St. Elizabeth: Track
The University of Michigan-bound star fell just short of a second state title in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a runner-up finish Saturday at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Her time was 13.55 seconds. Winner Vashti Thomas of Mt. Pleasant-San Jose finished in 13.44. Purvis won the state title in the 100 hurdles as a sophomore.
Ashton Purvis
St. Elizabeth: Track
The sophomore sister of Julian, Ashton showed her competitive nature with her disappointed reaction to running an 11.92
in the 100 meters — for first place — at the state
meet. She clearly wanted to run even faster. But there's no denying her historic accomplishment, becoming St. Elizabeth's first sprinter to earn a state crown. She added a second-place showing in the 200 meters, which brought more disappointment from her. That competitive drive figures to spell trouble for next year's competition.
Brazile Clark
Bishop O'Dowd: Track
Making her
handed. In the finals of the girls 800 meters at Cerritos
College, Clark ran a time of 2 minutes, 11.26 seconds to earn a fourth-place medal. This came
just a week after the Cal-bound Clark earned her first North Coast Section Meet of Champions title. Clark would make another trip to the podium, as she helped the Dragons 1,600 relay team take fifth place.
