What happened that icy eve in Des Moines one year ago gives a tiny glimpse of what was to come: a victory for a candidate who pushed newcomers to the polls by stirring passions not seen in decades and executing one of the most brilliantly organized and disciplined campaigns in modern campaign history.  

To be black on Jan. 20, 2009 is to know a deep satisfaction scarcely imagined by generations past. A blizzard of giddy emotions will envelop the souls of millions of black folks in America and all over the world. But because Barack Obama was embraced and elected by voters from a wide ethnic diversity, the sense of celebration is sweeter and even more profound.
