CLAYTON -- A May 10 memorial service is planned in San Bernardino for Fred Albrecht, Clayton's police chief from 1982 through 1990 and longtime Clayton resident who died April 15 after a long battle with heart disease. He was 75.
Fred had his first heart attack while chief in 1990 and retired from the department soon thereafter. He went on to become director of security at the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village. He had a 31-year career in law enforcement, and was an Army veteran.
More recently, Albrecht had been honored by the FBI and by the California Department of Justice for his role in helping solve two cold-case murders -- one in San Bernardino and one in Grand Junction, CO. The latter, the double-killing of a mother and daughter in the 70s, which troubled Albrecht for years, was solved thanks in large measure to his diligence and quick thinking in the evidence he meticulously collected at the scene, and amazingly was well preserved for DNA matching, said Patty Nelson, Albrecht's partner of the last 33 years.
