Sierra Club's Earth Day photo contest

All photographers and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to submit photos of their favorite way to get outdoors to win a Grand Canyon excursion. The deadline for submission is Earth Day, April 22.

The Sierra Club brings more than 200,000 people outdoors each year as part of programs for youth, adults and military veterans.

The winner will enjoy an eight-day backpacking trip through the historic North Bass Trail and Shinumo Amphitheater in Grand Canyon Park. The winner will also be outfitted with two round-trip plane tickets to Las Vegas, the guided trip, car rental, two pairs of Leki Macro Vario Carbon trekking poles, a Biolite camp stove, and a Sierra Club backpack. The winner may instead choose another adventure of equal value.

Columbia program wins Hoffmann Award

The Santa Clara County School Boards Association (SCCSBA) announced the 2014 winners of its Glenn W. Hoffmann Awards. This year marks the 30th year of this tradition.

Entries are scored based on their impact on students, innovation, creativity, and whether the program is replicable and sustainable. The Hoffmann Awards aim to provide a venue for other Santa Clara County schools to learn from, and potentially implement, similar programs that can benefit local students.
