The Los Angeles Sparks collected two of the WNBA's season-ending awards, with Nneka Ogwumike honored as rookie of the year and Carol Ross chosen coach of the year.

The awards were announced Sunday before the Sparks hosted Minnesota in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.

Ogwumike, out of Stanford, averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the regular season.

She had only 11 points as the Lynx edged the Sparks 80-79 to advance to the WNBA finals. The defending champions await either Connecticut or Indiana.

MLS

Landon Donovan's availability for World Cup qualifiers against Antigua & Barbuda and Guatemala is in doubt. The Los Angeles captain was carried off on a stretcher with a knee injury during a 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on Saturday. U.S. coach Juergen Klinsmann is scheduled to announce Monday the 23 call-ups for Friday's match in Antigua and the Oct. 16 game with Guatemala in Kansas City, Kan.

  • Eddie Gaven's header in stoppage time gave host Columbus (14-11-7) a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City (17-7-8). C.J. Sapong scored in the 10th minute for Kansas City, which has a three-point lead over second-place Chicago in the Eastern Conference. K.C. is five points behind the Earthquakes for the overall lead, and each team has two games left.

  • Eddie Johnson scored his 14th goal of the season, and host Seattle (14-7-10) cruised to a 3-0 win over Portland (7-16-9) before a crowd of 66,452.

  • Jorge Villafana's goal in the 69th minute snapped a 600-minute scoreless streak, and Chivas USA (7-17-8) pulled out a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas (9-12-11).

    Skiing

    Lindsey Vonn, a four-time overall women's World Cup champion and five-time downhill titleholder, has asked FIS, the sport's world governing body, for permission to compete in the men's downhill race Nov. 24 in Lake Louise, Alberta. "I'd like to have one chance in my life to race against them," Vonn told The New York Times. "Annika Sorenstam did it in golf and paved the way for women. I'm not asking for World Cup points. I'm not asking for any of that. I just want the chance to compete."

    Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky, 68, is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday. He's been housed in isolation at the Centre County Correctional Facility in Bellefonte since his conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse.

  • UCLA guard Tyler Lamb will have knee surgery Tuesday and be out 4-to-6 weeks. UCLA open the basketball season Nov. 9 against Indiana State.

    Novak Djokovic beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the China Open final in Beijing. In the women's final, Victoria Azarenka beat Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-1. Djokovic has won an ATP Tour-high 65 matches this year.

  • Japan's Kei Nishikori beat Milos Raonic 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-0 to win the Japan Open in Tokyo.
