The NHL and the locked-out players' association got back together Thursday in New York and accomplished enough over five-plus hours to make plans to meet again Friday.
"I am not going to discuss the negotiations or the substance of what we're talking about," commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday. "I really don't think that would be helpful to the process."
Said players' association executive director Donald Fehr, "All I can tell you is we've been meeting, and we'll be meeting again (Friday)."
During a second straight day of marathon negotiations Wednesday, the players' association made an offer on revenue sharing. It was unclear if the NHL made counterproposals. The belief is that the union has agreed to a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues, but that even division wouldn't kick in until the third year of the deal.
The college basketball season begins Friday with a game at a Europe military base and two aboard Navy ships. No. 14 Michigan State plays Connecticut at Ramstein Air Base in Kaiserslautern, Germany. No. 4 Ohio State will play Marquette on the USS Yorktown in Charleston, S.C., and Georgetown will face No. 10 Florida on the

Nick DeLeon scored in the 88th minute to give visiting D.C. United a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls in the MLS Eastern Conference semifinals. United advanced 2-1 on aggregate and plays at Houston on Sunday in the first of that home-and-home series. The Red Bulls were awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute as D.C. goalie Bill Hamid was given a red card. Kenny Cooper put the penalty kick past backup keeper Joe Willis, but the goal was called off by the referee because the Red Bulls entered the penalty area early. Roger Federer beat David Ferrer 6-4, 7-6 (5) and advanced to the semifinals of the ATP Finals with a group match to spare. Federer, the two-time defending champion, is 2-0 at London's O2 Arena, with his last round robin match against Juan Martin del Potro on Saturday. Del Potro beat Janko Tipsarevic 6-0, 6-4, improving to 1-1 and ousting the Serb with two losses. But Del Potro still needs to beat Federer to advance. Courtney Force topped first-day qualifying in the Funny Car division of the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona. The youngest of John Force's four daughters had a 4.032-second run at 315.93 mph in a Ford Mustang. Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins was released from a Chorley, England, hospital after a collision with a car. The Olympic champion sustained bruises to his ribs and hands when hit while training on his bike.
