Meleana Shim and Lauren Matheson scored first-half goals, and No. 17 Santa Clara defeated Long Beach State 2-1 Saturday in a first-round NCAA tournament match at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Broncos (12-3-6) earned a second-round match against top-seeded and defending champion Stanford (18-1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Stanford.
Julie Johnston and Sofia Huerta had the two Santa Clara assists, while freshman goalkeeper Andi Tostanoski made five saves.
Long Beach State finished its season 12-8.
The Bears (16-5) will play San Diego State (21-1) in the next round at a time and site to be determined.
Pepperdine finished 14-7.
Field hockey
The No. 11 Stanford women lost 4-1 to No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Kelsey Harbin accounted for the Cardinal's goal. Stanford finished its season 16-7.
Men's water polo
Sophomore Graham Nesbit scored three goals to help No. 4 Cal (13-7) defeat No. 18 Santa Clara 15-8 at Spieker
Matt Kochalko and James Rude scored two goals each for the Broncos (9-17).
Women's volleyball
With her fourth ace of the night, Hanah Blume sealed a 25-22, 26-24, 25-21 win for San Jose State (13-14, 9-8) over Western Athletic Conference leader Utah State (19-8, 14-3) at Spartan Gym. Mary Alice O'Reilly had 14 kills for the Spartans.
Golf
Arcadia's Angel Yin won her second California Women's Amateur with a 2-up victory over Livermore's Casie Cathrea at Quail Lodge in Carmel.
Hockey
Former Shark Devin Setoguchi had two goals in the Ontario Reign's 7-0 ECHL win over the San Francisco Bulls at the Cow Palace.
Junior college basketball
San Jose City College's Percy Carr recorded his 800th coaching victory Friday night in an 87-62 win over Merced Community College. Carr, in his 35th year at SJCC, is the winningest coach in California community college history.
