Georgetown and Tennessee held each other scoreless over the final four minutes, and the No. 20 Hoyas beat the Volunteers 37-36 in a display of abysmal shooting Friday night in the SEC/Big East Challenge in Washington.
On a night when the "challenge" part of the event was the task of simply putting the ball in the basket, the teams combined to make just 7 of 20 shots -- from the free-throw line. The field-goal shooting was just as horrid, with the Vols (4-2) hitting 33 percent and the Hoyas 36 percent.
Appropriately enough, the final possession of Friday's game consisted of an air ball by Tennessee's Skylar McBee. The rebound went out of bounds to the Vols, and Jordan McRae's 3-pointer at the buzzer missed as Georgetown improved to 5-1.
No player scored in double figures for either team.
The Vols started 4 for 22 from the field and late in the first half had nearly as many fouls (10) as points (11).
Syracuse 91, Arkansas 82: James Southerland scored a career-high 35 points to lead No. 6 Syracuse to a win over host Arkansas (3-3). Southerland was also a career-best 9 for 13 on 3-pointers for the Orange (5-0).
Kansas 84, Oregon State 78: Ben McLemore scored 21 points, Travis Releford added 20 and No. 10 Kansas (6-1) held off repeated Oregon State (4-2) rallies in Kansas City, Mo.
Hofstra: Four basketball players were arrested on burglary charges stemming from dormitory room break-ins, police in Mineola, N.Y., said. Detectives said the players were charged in six burglaries that occurred between Oct. 4 and Nov. 5.
Stanford 87, UC Davis 38: Chiney Ogwumike had a career high-tying 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and No. 1 Stanford used a 17-2 run late in the first half to pull away from host UC Davis (2-3). Ogwumike had as many points in the first half (19) as the Aggies' entire team.
Toni Kokenis added 11 points while Amber Orrange had six points and seven assists for the top-ranked Cardinal (7-0).
Cal 63, Old Dominion 47: Layushia Clarendon scored 15 points and No. 10 Cal survived a scare in a sloppy road debut, beating Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
Brittany Boyd added 11 points and Gennifer Brandon had nine points and 17 rebounds for the Golden Bears (6-0), who won despite committing 25 turnovers and missing 16 of 32 free throws. Cal outrebounded ODU (4-1) 66-33.
