The second-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team opened the NCAA tournament with a 25-10, 25-17, 25-10 sweep over Jackson State on Friday night at Maples Pavilion.
Brittany Howard had nine kills for the Cardinal.
Stanford (28-3) will face Western Kentucky on Saturday at 7 p.m. Western Kentucky (33-3) breezed to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-17 win over Loyola Marymount earlier at Maples.
Aquatics
Cal's Marcin Tarczynski, Trevor Hoyt, Seth Stubblefield and Fabio Gimondi won the 400-yard medley relay at the Georgia Fall Invitational in Athens, Ga. Tarczynski also won the 200 individual medley in 1:44.36. The Cal women's team of Cindy Tran, Caitlin Leverenz, Rachel Bootsma and Elizabeth Pelton also won the 400 medley relay, and Pelton won the 200 IM in 1:53.39.
Golf
Two-time tour winner Christina Kim of San Jose, tied for third entering the day at the LPGA Tour qualifying tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., had a 3-over 75 to drop into a tie for 13th at 2-under 214.
The top 20 in the five-round event will earn full tour status.
Miscellany
Cal beat North Carolina State 26-12 and Middlebury 29-0 and led Arkansas State at halftime before falling 10-7 to the Red Wolves in pool play at the USA Rugby National College 7s Championships in College Station, Texas. Saint Mary's went 3-0, beating Western Washington 19-17, Bowling Green 19-12 and Texas A&M 17-5.
