Stanford dropped one spot to No. 6 in The Associated Press' women's basketball poll Monday, one day after the Cardinal's 67-55 home loss to Cal, which remained No. 7.

The loss ended Stanford's conference winning streak at 81 games, but it was mitigated by the Cardinal's 62-53 victory at Cal on Tuesday.

Kentucky took over the No. 5 spot, marking the Wildcats' best ranking in nearly 30 years.

The top four remained intact with Baylor at No. 1, followed by Notre Dame, Connecticut and Duke.

Saint Mary's: Junior guard Jackie Nared was named West Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week after totaling 17 points and nine rebounds in a 54-51 victory over Gonzaga.

San Jose State: Freshman forward Emily Schill was named Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week after getting 36 points, 18 rebounds and six assists in a 103-80 victory over Utah State.

Men

USC: Kevin O'Neill was fired as coach after going 48-65 over 31/2 seasons.

"We just didn't win enough last year and this year. That's what this business is," O'Neill told The Associated Press by phone.

"We tried to do as well as we could, tried to get the program to the highest level. My goal every day going in there was to try to win a national title."

USC is 7-10 this season after going 6-26 last season.

Louisville 73, Connecticut 58: Russ Smith scored 23 points and the Cardinals (16-1, 4-0 Big East) celebrated their new No. 1 ranking by beating the Huskies (12-4, 2-2) in Hartford, Conn.

The only other time Louisville was ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press' Top 25 was the final poll of 2008-09.

Kansas 61, Baylor 44: Ben McLemore scored 17 points before leaving in the final minutes with a right-ankle injury, and the fourth-ranked Jayhawks (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) rolled past the Bears (11-5, 3-1) in Lawrence, Kan.

Florida: Forward Casey Prather will be out 10 to 14 days because of a high-ankle sprain.

Wyoming: Guard Luke Martinez, who is averaging 14.5 points per game, has been suspended indefinitely by the team after getting in a bar fight.

Iowa State: Prosecutors in Story County have dropped a sexual abuse charge against reserve point guard Bubu Palo, possibly paving the way for him to rejoin the Cyclones.
