Sam Querrey beat Thiago Alves 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Sunday to give the United States a 3-2 victory over Brazil and a spot in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in Jacksonville, Fla.
The U.S. will host Novak Djokovic and Serbia on April 5-7 in Boise, Idaho.
Querrey stepped up after teammate John Isner lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3 to Thomaz Bellucci earlier Sunday, forcing a deciding fifth match.
"I was very happy with the way I battled through (the match)," the 20th-ranked Querrey said.
Visiting Serbia lost both reverse singles matches to Belgium in Charlerol after it qualified for the quarterfinals a day earlier.
Tomas Berdych needed just around three hours to beat Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) and lift the Czech Republic to an insurmountable 3-1 lead over host Switzerland in Geneva. Both were on the court one day after playing in a 7-hour, 1-minute doubles match. The defending champion Czechs earned a home quarterfinal against Kazakhstan.
