New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter could start running on a field in the next few days and expects to be ready for opening day against Boston on April 1.
"Why wouldn't it be realistic?" Jeter said Sunday as he met with reporters at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. "I'm right where I'm supposed to be. Opening day, yeah, it's been a goal all along."
Jeter broke his left ankle in the A.L. Championship Series opener against Detroit on Oct. 13 and had surgery a week later.
Defending champion Victoria Azarenka stunned Serena Williams 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3 to win the Qatar Open in Doha, earning her 16th title and ending a 10-match losing streak against the American.
Azarenka will give up the No. 1 ranking to Williams on Monday but extended her winning streak to 14 matches, including her second Australian Open title.

Courtney Force raced to victory in Funny Car at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, and defending Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown walked away from a fiery crash with just minor injuries. Force had a 4.025-second run at 317.12 mph in her Ford Mustang to claim her second career win.
The race was delayed 90 minutes for cleanup after Brown's dragster went out of control and crashed after crossing the finish line during eliminations. The car's engine burst into flames, and the dragster slid into a retaining wall. Brown walked away.
The Los Angeles Galaxy said Landon Donovan will rejoin the team during the final week of March after a break of almost four months.
The veteran midfielder had said last fall he was uncertain whether he wanted to continue playing. The Galaxy opens its MLS title defense against Chicago on March 3.
Austrian Marcel Hirscher won the men's slalom on the last day of the skiing world championships in Schladming, Austria.
Ted Ligety failed to finish when he lost his balance 15 seconds into his first run. With a win, Ligety would have tied the record held by Jean-Claude Killy, who won four golds in 1968. Ligety helped the U.S. top the gold medal table with four.
