Cal graduate Alex Morgan and four former Stanford stars were named to the U.S. women's soccer team for the prestigious Algarve Cup on March 6-13 in Portugal. The Cardinal players are Nicole Barnhart, Rachel Buehler, Kelley O'Hara and Christen Press.

Barnhart will compete for the starting goalkeeper position, with Hope Solo out because of a wrist injury.

College

Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike was one of five women's basketball players named to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America Division I team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Ogwumike has a 3.41 cumulative GPA while majoring in international relations.

In men's basketball, Saint Mary's Matthew Dellavedova made the second team and Santa Clara's Marc Trasolini the third team.

  • The top-ranked Cal men's golf team leads the John A. Burns Intercollegiate tournament in Kahuku, Hawaii, by 16 shots over second-place BYU after two rounds at the Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort. Cal's Joel Stalter (70-137) and Max Homa (68-139) are the top two individuals. The tournament ends Friday.
