Sidney Crosby has a broken jaw and is out indefinitely after being hit in the mouth with a puck during a win against the New York Islanders on Saturday.
The Pittsburgh Penguins said on the team website Sunday that Crosby had surgery Saturday night, and there will be an update on his status later in the week.
Crosby, the NHL's leading scorer, was struck in the face during the first period of the Penguins' 2-0 win. Slow-motion replays showed multiple teeth flying out of his mouth after the puck struck him during his first shift. The team said Crosby had "major dental work" and will have more done later in the week.
Blackhawks 7, Red Wings 1: In less than two minutes, Chicago did all the damage it needed to do. And then the Blackhawks just kept scoring.
The Blackhawks scored three goals during a span of 1:39 early in the first period, and Brandon Saad and Dave Bolland finished with two goal apiece in Chicago's win over host Detroit.
"Especially these early games, it's nice to get off to a good start," Saad said. "We got a couple of bounces and got a couple of goals and it was nice to play with the lead."
Jonathan Toews added a goal and two assists and Jeremy Morin and Nick Leddy, also scored for Chicago. Cory Crawford made 33 saves.
Blue Jackets 2, Ducks 1: Mark Letestu set up the Blue Jackets' only goal in regulation and scored the winner in overtime, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 of 30 shots to lead host Columbus past Anaheim.
The victory improved the Blue Jackets to 9-0-3 in their past 12 games at Nationwide Arena and gave them points in 15 of their past 17 games (10-2-5) to crawl into playoff contention in the West. Emerson Etem had the only goal for the Ducks.
Kings 3, Stars 2: Brad Richardson and Justin Williams scored third-period goals just over a minute apart to help lift Los Angeles to a victory over host Dallas.
Bruins 2, Sabres 0: David Krejci and Nathan Horton scored goals less than three minutes apart in the third period, and Anton Khudobin stopped 26 shots in leading Boston over host Buffalo.
