A Utah teen accused of punching a soccer referee who later died was charged Wednesday with homicide by assault, which carries a possible prison sentence of up to five years.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said he'll seek to try the teen as an adult in the death of 46-year-old Ricardo Portillo.
The 17-year-old has been in juvenile detention since April 27 when the incident occurred at a recreational-league match. The punch occurred after the teen was issued a yellow card. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring at the end of the season. "It's the right time," the 71-year-old Scotsman said. A NASCAR appeals panel eased some penalties imposed on Joe Gibbs Racing for having an illegal connecting rod in Matt Kenseth's race-winning engine at Kansas Speedway last month. The part was too light by 3 grams. The points deducted from Kenseth were reduced from 50 to 12. The panel reduced crew chief Jason Ratcliff's suspension from six races to one and eliminated the six-race suspension for Joe Gibbs. It let stand Ratcliff's $200,000 fine. Larry Kehres, who won 11 NCAA Division III football titles at Mount Union (Ohio), is stepping down. Kehres, 63, went 332-24-3 in 27 seasons.
