Santa Clara men's basketball coach Kerry Keating announced the signing of two players Wednesday -- Fresno State graduate Jerry Brown and Nigerian Emmanuel Ndumanya.
The 2013 recruiting class already included Jared Brownridge of Rockford, Ill., Jarvis Pugh of Murphy, Texas, and Jalen Richard of San Tan Valley, Ariz.
Brown is a 6-foot-7 forward from Richmond who attended Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco. He'll be enrolled in the new one-year entrepreneurship master's program at SCU.
Ndumanya, a 6-10 forward, attended Serra High-Gardena. Oscar Sanay went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs to lead regular-season champion CSU Bakersfield (36-21) to an 11-3 win over San Jose State (17-39) in both teams' opener of the WAC baseball tournament in Grand Prairie, Texas. Dane Lund had a three-run double in the fifth for the Spartans, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Senior All-America pitcher Mark Appel was named the Pac-12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Appel is 8-4 with a 1.97 ERA in 12 starts this season. He also earned his bachelor's degree in March. Oklahoma pitcher Keilani Ricketts (Archbishop Mitty High) is a finalist for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year award. The other finalists are Ricketts' teammate Lauren Chamberlain and Tennessee's Raven Chavanne. Ricketts won the award as a junior in 2012. She is 29-1 with a 1.21 ERA this season for the Sooners, who'll host Texas A&M this weekend in a Super Regional. Winning Santa Clara's first-ever individual match at the NCAA women's tennis championships, Katie Le beat Michigan's Emina Bektas 7-6 (3), 7-5 in Urbana, Ill. San Jose State's Klaudia Boczova lost to Miami's Stephanie Wagner 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Cal's Zsofi Susanyi and Klara Fabikova both advanced. Also, Cal's Ben McLachlan and Campbell Johnson both lost in the round of 64 at the men's championships. Stanford posted an even-par 288 to move into fifth after the second round of the rain-delayed NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Athens, Ga. The Cardinal was 2-over 578. USC led at 16-under 560. San Jose State was tied for 10th at 12 over with three scores yet to be recorded. Kathleen Rojas had finished her round, but a playing partner was still on the 18th green. Rachelle Reali's group was playing 18, and Regan De Guzman's group was on 17. De Guzman was 1 under overall. Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse (68) was fifth at 4-under 140. Alabama's Stephanie Meadow (67) led at 136. Stanford diving coach Rick Schavone will help coach the United States at the 2013 FINA World Championships. He'll be joined in Barcelona this summer by Stanford sophomore Kristian Ipsen.
The San Jose Giants (30-16) failed to hold a 6-0 lead, falling 11-6 at High Desert (22-24). Jeff Arnold hit his eighth homer in a five-run third inning for the Giants, but High Desert scored three times in its half of the third and seven times in the sixth.
