Stanford football has sold out of season tickets for the first time in school history.
Riding momentum from winning the Pac-12 Conference and Rose Bowl last season, Stanford announced Tuesday that it capped season tickets at a record 33,000 sold. The number of tickets taken rises to 38,000 when including the student section at 50,000-seat Stanford Stadium.
The school says a limited number of individual game tickets will go on sale Aug. 1.
The Cardinal beat Wisconsin 20-14 on Jan. 1 for the school's first Rose Bowl victory since 1972. Stanford is 24-2 at home over the last four seasons. The Cardinal opens this season at home against San Jose State on Sept. 7. The seven-game home schedule includes games against Oregon, Cal and Notre Dame.
Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi has been invited to attend the national orientation camp for Team Finland in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Finnish Ice Hockey Association announced.
Fifty-four players were invited to the camp, eight of them goaltenders. The Winter Games are set for Feb. 7-23 in Sochi, Russia.
Finland will compete in Group B with Austria, Canada and Norway in Sochi. Finland's men's team has medaled in three of the last four Olympics since NHL players began participating in the games, the most medals for a men's ice hockey program in that span.
Justin Suh of San Jose advanced to match play with a 5-over-par 149 after two rounds of stroke play at the U.S. Boys' Junior Amateur in Truckee. Amay Poria of Morgan Hill (8-over 152) and Bradley Knox of Menlo Park (10-over 154) failed to qualify for match play.
Run-scoring doubles by Brandon Meredith and Nolan Fontana helped Lancaster break a 4-4 tie in a three-run eighth inning, and the host JetHawks beat the San Jose Giants 7-4.
The Giants scored all their runs in the second inning, which began with consecutive singles by Devin Harris, Ricky Oropesa and Jeff Arnold. Arnold's hit scored a run, another scored on an error, and Chris Lofton added an RBI single. Lofton came around to score on a groundout.
