The San Jose Earthquakes open their 2014 training camp Jan. 26 and have scheduled five exhibitions in February against Major League Soccer teams.
San Jose will spend a week in Tucson, Ariz., and another week in Portland, Ore., playing all but one of its games at those locales.
The Quakes will face the Los Angeles Galaxy on Feb. 15 at Chukchansi Park in Fresno.
During a seven-day trip to Tucson, San Jose is scheduled to play the Seattle Sounders on Feb. 5 and the Houston Dynamo on Feb. 8. The games will be shown on a livestream at MLSsoccer.com.
The Quakes also will participate in the Rose City Invitational in Portland. San Jose will face the Portland Timbers on Feb. 23, the Vancouver Whitecaps on Feb. 26 and Jamaica's Portmore United FC on March 1. The games will be shown via livestream at www.sjearthquakes.com.
The Quakes play four games in 12 days to start the season. They open the MLS regular season March 15 against Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium. They also play host to Mexican club Toluca on March 11 in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. San Jose travels to Toluca on March 19 before a road game against MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City on March 22.
The Texas Rangers named Justin Mashore as hitting coach of the Triple-A Round Rock Express. Mashore, who attended Clayton Valley High, played 11 seasons in the minor leagues and was the hitting coach for the Single-A Hickory Crawdads in 2013.
Cal senior Brandon Hagy shot an even-par 72 to move up six spots into a tie for 10th halfway through the Australian Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne Golf Club at 1-over 145. Hagy trails leader Simon Viitakangas (70) by five shots. Hagy's round included an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole.
Nominations for the $100,000 California Derby, which will be run Jan. 18 at Golden Gate Fields, are due Thursday. The 11/16-mile race is for 3-year-olds and is the first stakes of the winter/spring meeting. Racing at the Albany track resumes Thursday with first post at 12:45 p.m.
