BiRdZ oF PlaY performing Friday at arts center

More music and more art is on tap at the Piedmont Center for the Arts, Piedmont's cultural gathering place at 801 Magnolia Ave.

BiRdZ oF PlaY, a madcap group of veteran rockers and pickers, will play covers of Buddy Holly and other beloved rockers as well as folk and country. The show is from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Alexander Sung will do a harpsichord recital at 4 p.m. Feb. 9, performing Mozart. Tickets are for $20 general, $15 for seniors and students. Call 415-392-4400 for tickets.

Voci Women's Vocal Ensemble performs at 4 p.m. Feb. 10, with an afternoon of romantic music to celebrate Valentine's Day. A donation of $45 includes wine and appetizers. Tickets available at www.vocisings.com or at the door.

A modern stitch quilt show with an exhibit of more than 20 quilt arts is scheduled to run from Feb. 1-24. Opening reception 6-8 p.m. Feb. 2.

All are welcome to attend this fundraiser for the school that takes place at Piedmont Veterans Hall, 401 Highland Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. for music and cocktails, with dinner at 7 p.m. The menu will include salad, all-you-can-eat crab, lasagna and a no-host bar. The Wildwood Dads will put on a show; there will be a raffle and live music.

Tickets are $50 per person, with 10 drink tickets for $20 and 10 raffle tickets for $20. Consider donating new or gently used books at the fundraiser appropriate for first- and second-graders and multicultural and Spanish-language books, which will be donated to needy East Bay children. Children's choir holding local auditions Saturday

The internationally acclaimed Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir is holding auditions for boys and girls ages 4 and older between 9:15 a.m. and noon Saturday by appointment.

Auditions will be at the Veterans Hall, 401 Highland Ave., Piedmont. Artistic Director Robert Geary leads the program of vocal training and music education that has 12 different choirs, ranging from kinder levels up.

Lunar New Year set for Sunday in Piedmont

For many Asian countries, the Lunar New Year is the most important holiday of the year.

The Piedmont Asian American Club (PAAC) and the Piedmont Language School (PLS) are co-sponsoring a Lunar New Year celebration from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Haven Elementary's Ellen Driscoll Playhouse at 325 Highland Ave., Piedmont.

Entertainment will include a dance demonstration from Patty Chu's Chinese folk dance group as well as Japanese taiko drumming from Eden Aoba. There will also be light refreshments and calligraphy demonstrations.

LWV to host Thursday forum on Measure A

The League of Women Voters of Piedmont will hold an election forum on Measure A, the school parcel tax.

It will be from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday in City Council chambers at 120 Vista Ave. in Piedmont. Campaign chairs Doug Ireland and Jonathan Davis will present the pros of the measure, while Rick Schiller and Tom Clark will discuss their reasons for opposing it. Jan Zovickian will be moderator.

The public is encouraged to attend to learn more about the parcel tax that will be on the March 5 ballot. The forum may also be viewed on Piedmont's community channel KCOM, Channel 27.

City to hold Feb. 12 town hall meeting

The city of Piedmont will hold a town-hall meeting at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Veterans Memorial Building to introduce residents to Piedmont's new Police Chief Rikki Goede. This meeting will be hosted by the city's Public Safety Committee and will be attended by members of the City Council, the City Administrator and other city officials.

Understanding that residents have been upset by recent crimes in Piedmont, there will be a presentation about the increase of crime in Piedmont with a significant focus on the steps that the police department is taking to combat these trends. There will also be a time block for question and answer period with Chief Goede, who left the San Jose Police Department as assistant chief, after working her way up through the department for 16 years.

Goede has worked in all areas of police activities, including patrol, field training, crime prevention, internal affairs, robbery, gang investigations, and a variety of command assignments.

The formal agenda for the meeting is being developed in consultation with the Public Safety Committee and will be released as the town hall meeting draws near.

Casting call on Feb. 14 for two Wilder plays

There is a casting call for two Thornton Wilder one-act plays produced by Piedmont Repertory Company and directed by Michael French.
