OAKLAND -- A Glenview gas station was the target of a devastating burglary, crippling the business and costing at least tens of thousands of dollars in damage in the early-morning hours of June 20.

It was at 3:17 a.m. when the video camera at the Union 76 gas station located at 4500 Park Blvd. captured a pickup truck snaking through the gas pumps and ramming into the mini-mart three times, breaking the 6-inch brick wall, and the suspects hauling an ATM machine out of the mini-mart with a chain.

No one was injured and nothing else was stolen, said owner Babu Rampur.

Rampur said that the gas station has been burglarized several times in the last decade that he has owned the station, but said he had never seen anything like this.

"It's happening more often, but not like this," Rampur said. "I've had the door broken down once in a blue moon, but I've never seen anything like this.

"They don't care that they are on camera. They know nothing will happen," said Rampur.

The police came within minutes. There was a similar incident that had occurred around the same time on MacArthur Boulevard, Rampur said.

"They (the police) came really quickly, believe me," he said.

The damage to the gas station was extensive. Rampur is still awaiting the estimated cost of reconstructing the front of the mini-mart.

To make matters worse, the station's computer system was destroyed in the incident. Rampur described the computer as the brains of the station. Without it, the gas pumps cannot be operated. The $13,000 computer will take up to three weeks to configure and deliver to the station. While the garage and mechanical services have remained open, Rampur will be unable to pump gas until the new computer is delivered to the site.

Meanwhile, the bills pile up.

"I hurt inside, but what can I do?" Rampur said.

"I have a sophisticated camera and alarm system -- can you imagine?" he said. "It's a metal building. I don't know what else I can do. I hope they can fix it up really quick."
