OAKLAND -- Elsa Givan, a recent graduate of College Prep's class of 2013, was awarded the first place speaker award in Policy Debate at the world's largest academic competition.
More than 3,000 students qualified for the national tournament hosted by the National Forensic League on June 16-21 in Birmingham, Ala. Elsa Givan received the highest cumulative points during the tournament for the quality of her speaking and arguments.
College Preparatory's debate director, Lexy Green, said, "College Prep is fortunate to have a long history of excellence in debate, but Elsa's first-place finish at the national championship really stands out. It's like receiving the Academy Award for debate."
During the school year, thousands of teams competed at district qualifying tournaments to qualify for the national championship. Only three out of about 30 teams from the San Francisco Bay NFL District qualified to attend, with College Prep sending two teams.
"Debate at College Prep isn't just a team; it's a family," Givan said. "I have had my happiest moments at debate tournaments, and not because of the wins or losses, but rather because of the people I was with."
