School board accepts donation to PHS band

The Piedmont Unified School District Board of Education has accepted a generous donation of $5,000 to the Piedmont High band program.

The donation was made by the family of Joey Armstrong in honor of his recent graduation from Piedmont High.

The donation was announced at the board's July 10 meeting.

Rec Department offers students summer jobs

Give a local student a summer job through Piedmont Recreation Department's PLAY (Piedmont League Action for Youth) program.

The program operates through late August. Youths are paid a wage to perform baby-sitting, gardening, pet care, house sitting, tutoring, party help and more.

Center for the Arts hosting photo exhibit

Piedmont Center for the Arts at 801 Magnolia Ave. is hosting a photography exhibit by John Van Winkle weekends through July 28.

Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. July 27 and noon to 4 p.m. July 28.

A quilt show will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the center.

The quilts will be displayed noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 16, 17, 18.

Center for the Arts seeks emerging new virtuosos

Piedmont Center for the Arts is putting out a call to Bay Area emerging artists to feature their work in a juried art show premiering Nov. 1. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 2.

Piedmont High alumna Rene de Guzman, senior curator of art for Oakland Museum of California, will select works for this juried art exhibition. It is themed "Return to Simplicity."

Competition is open to artists working in two-dimensional media including photography, wall sculpture, fabric, mixed media, printmaking and paintings and drawings in oil, acrylic, pastels, ink and graphite.

Cash prizes will be given courtesy of John P. Thornborrow Memorial Endowment Fund. First place is $2,500; second place $1,000; third place $500 plus honorable mentions. PBF announces matching Shapiro fund challenge

The Piedmont Beautification Foundation spring newsletter announces a matching fund challenge.

Donate now and your contribution toward the Shapiro Endowment Fund will automatically be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000 before Dec. 31, 2014.

This generous donation by PBF adviser Hort. Shapiro and his daughters, Katie Harmon and Emily Johnson, was established in memory of Betty Shapiro, wife and mother and grandmother.

Tax-deductible checks may be made payable to PBF and mailed or hand delivered to Piedmont Beautification Foundation, Piedmont City Hall, 120 Vista Ave., Piedmont, CA 94611. Donor names will be published in the Piedmonter and Piedmont Post.

City community pool hosting classes, lessons

Plunge in for fun and exercise at the Piedmont community pool, which is offering a host of classes and swimming opportunities to the public.

The pool is open to members as well as "walk-up" nonmembers. Walk-up hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, with no walk-ups on Sundays or holidays.

Main pool lap swimming hours are 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The pool is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for nonresidents.

Water aerobics meets from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $50 for a 10-punch pass for residents or $60 for nonresidents.

The adult swim program to work on endurance and stroke refinement is 9 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, for a monthly fee of $80. Harvest Festival panel seeks new members

The Piedmont Harvest Festival committee is accepting applications for new members to help with the popular event on Sept. 29. Each year the citywide event features booths, homegrown fruits, vegetables, preserves and other goodies from home kitchens and gardens. Prizes are awarded in several categories during the fun day.
