Around Pleasanton: Foothill High civics team makes nationals

This is Foothill's first opportunity to compete at this level since their involvement with We the People began in 1998. 
The Sunol-Ohlone Regional Wilderness will celebrate the season with its annual Spring Wildflower Festival, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There's also a 2-mile wildflower walk from 2 to 4:30 p.m. April 10 at Tilden Nature Area near Berkeley, guided by naturalist Trent Pearce.

A profound example of a limited footprint that makes a giant-sized imprint can be found now through May 15 at a striking exhibit, "Art of Survival," at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley. The artifacts and photographs tucked into the cozy museum display a dark period in U.S. history, when President Roosevelt on Feb. 19, 1942, signed Executive Order No. 9066.

Hailed as the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers, Tammy Ma, who works on the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, was one of 105 people in the country to receive the award.

The GPS has changed our lives, from the longest trip to the bottom of California to the shortest trip to the nearest Starbucks. On this last trip we got to know our Navigator quite well. She was so personable, I wanted to call her "Mommy," but my husband preferred "Hal9000," even though it was clearly a girl.

Various area services provide transportation and other aid to those in need. "No one wants to go to assisted living or live with family and be a burden," Caring Hands volunteer Lisa Vitalone said. "People want to be independent, and sometimes it's only a matter of having someone help for a couple of hours a week to make that difference.  
 
The Dublin City Council on Tuesday moved toward increasing its pay to $1,099 from $904 a month.
