First Place Awarded -- Elsa Givan, of Alamo, a recent graduate of the College Preparatory School in Oakland, was awarded the First Place Speaker award in policy debate at the world's largest academic competition. Of more than 3,000 students who qualified for the national tournament hosted by the National Forensic League in Birmingham, Ala., Givan received the highest cumulative points during the tournament for the quality of her speaking and arguments. Elsa is the daughter of Mollie and Tom Givan, and her younger brother, Oliver, 17, is also a debater. Elsa Givan will debate for Georgetown University with the class of 2018.

Sandia honors young women in math and science. Sandia Women's Connection sponsors a Math and Science Awards program where teachers from 11 high schools in Livermore, Dublin, Pleasanton, Tracy and Manteca each nominated two students, one for outstanding achievement in math and one for outstanding achievement in science. Local soldier graduates. Air Force Airman 1st Class Paul D. Savage graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Savage earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Carrie Regazzi, of San Ramon. The airman is a 2004 graduate of Santa Rosa High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in 2008 from UC Berkeley.

New Commission. Army 2nd Lt. Jonathan C. Cheung has graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. Cheung is the son of Shiu-Mei and Elisha Cheung, of Dublin. He is a 2001 graduate of Monte Vista High School in Danville. He received a bachelor's degree in 2005 from UC Irvine.
